Necrotizing Pneumonia and Pneumothorax in a Postpartum Cat with Endometritis: A Case Report

This case report aims to describe necrotizing pneumonia (NP), a rare and severe complication of bacterial pneumonia, in a postpartum cat.A 7-yearold domestic shorthair cat presented with anorexia, lethargy, and respiratory distress following parturition.Diagnostic imaging revealed bilateral pulmonary consolidation with multiple cavitary lesions, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and suspected bronchopleural fistulae.Pleural effusion analysis confirmed septic exudate, and bacterial culture of the pleural effusion identified Escherichia coli.Despite intensive antimicrobial therapy and respiratory support, the condi- tion deteriorated, resulting in death. This case suggests a possible association between postpartum endometritis and NP, with hematogenous dissemination representing one possible route of infection, and demonstrates the utility of computed tomography for diagnosis.
