Sequences of basketball players’ technical and tactical actions and team possession effectiveness in the 2026 EuroLeague semifinals and final

Purpose: to examine how sequences of basketball players’ technical and tactical actions were associated with team possession effectiveness in the two semifinals and the final of the 2026 EuroLeague. Material and methods: three games, 1,645 official play-by-play events, and 445 team possessions were analysed. Video coding identified possession boundaries, offensive phases, offensive actions, and defensive responses. Agreement between two observers was assessed for 90 possessions. Transition proportions and odds ratios for scoring possessions were calculated with 95% confidence intervals. Results: the database scoring total matched the final game scores, amounting to 512 points. A transition attack followed 27 of 30 steals (90.0%) and 104 of 162 defensive rebounds (64.2%). Early offense progressed to pick-and-roll in 57 of 104 possessions (54.8%). Compared with half-court offense, transition had a crude odds ratio of 2.06 (95% confidence interval 1.32–3.21) for a scoring possession; the adjusted estimate was 2.01 (1.14–3.68). The adjusted interval for early offense included 1, providing no clear evidence of a difference. Observer agreement coefficients exceeded 0.80. Conclusions: the data support associations of steals and defensive rebounds with transition attacks and of transition attacks with higher scoring odds in the games studied. The interaction between pick-and-roll and drop coverage requires further investigation. These associations do not establish the causal superiority of any tactical option, given the three-game sample.
