China–Taiwan Tensions and Their Impact on the Indo-Pacific: Strategic Implications for Regional Security and India's Role

The Taiwan Strait is a central Indo-Pacific security flashpoint because the dispute between Beijing and Taipei intersects with great-power competition, maritime trade and advanced semiconductor production. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) claims Taiwan and has not renounced force; Taiwan is governed separately by elected institutions and maintains a distinct political identity. Military exercises, air and maritime operations, economic pressure and cyber activity raise the risk of miscalculation, though pressure does not prove that invasion is imminent. This paper examines cross-Strait history, China’s grey-zone strategy, regional consequences and the responses of the United States, Japan, Australia and regional groupings. It applies Offensive Realism, security-dilemma theory and Power Transition Theory to official documents, institutional reports and scholarly literature. It argues that a crisis could disrupt semiconductor supplies, raise shipping costs, intensify military deployments and weaken confidence in peaceful dispute management. For India, the priority is strategic hedging: support restraint, strengthen maritime awareness, diversify technology and trade dependencies, deepen practical engagement with Taiwan and prepare for contingencies without making premature commitments to military intervention.
