Emergence in Three Phases: A Coherence-Pattern Cosmology from Non-Integrable PhaseFactors
Half a century after P. W. Anderson declared that "more is diff erent," the emergence program hasconquered condensed matter through topological order: phases distinguished not by symmetrybreaking but by patterns of long-range entanglement. We argue that the fi nal frontier of thisprogram is spacetime itself. We develop a cosmology in which cosmic history is a gas-to-liquid-to-solid sequence of coherence patterns of non-integrable phase factors (NIPFs) W(C) = exp(i∮A·dx),the gauge-invariant holonomies introduced by C. N. Yang in 1974. A single order parameter, thephase-coherence length ξ_φ, classifi es the three phases. Two transitions deliver three births insequence: at the gas-to-liquid transition, W1, the birth of bosons, as the photon, the gluons, theW and Z, and the Higgs doublet appear as collective modes of the newly coherent pattern; atcrystallization, the liquid-to-solid transition, W2, the birth of chiral fermions, as crystallions —localized, topologically stable confi gurations frozen into the solid — with handedness locked bythe fi rst fl uctuation amplifi ed; and W3, the birth of mass, via the Higgs mechanism. Gravityfollows as the strain energy of the solid pattern: second-order emergence, weak because it issecond-order [hypothesis], with the Einstein equation as its macroscopic equation of state. Weformulate falsifi able predictions, report a fi rst lattice test of the crystallion hypothesis, anddelineate the open constructions, an explicit phase-factor action S[W], the W(C)-to-metric map,and the induction calculation, that will decide the program's fate.
