Mathematics is often viewed as nothing more than formal formulas, even though its concepts are intuitively present in various artistic activities, including sketching faces. This study aims to describe the level of interest in mathematics among members of the SEMANGART Art Community and to identify their perceptions regarding the use of mathematical concepts in the sketching process. Using a quantitative descriptive approach with a survey method, data were collected through an online poll involving 49 community members (saturation sampling) and analyzed using descriptive statistics calculated as percentages. The results show that 57.23% of respondents have a positive interest in mathematics. In addition, 73.47% of respondents stated that they used concepts or calculations related to mathematics in the process of drawing facial sketches. These findings indicate a perception of the involvement of mathematics in drawing activities, although this study has not yet specifically identified the types of mathematical concepts used by each respondent. Based on a literature review, the activity of drawing faces has the potential to involve aspects of proportion, measurement, geometry, and spatial relationships; however, these aspects still require verification through direct observation and interviews. This study found that mathematical concepts are applied intuitively in the practice of visual arts, even though artists do not always recognize them as formal mathematics. These findings provide an initial insight into the potential of face sketching as an ethnomathematics context in mathematics education. Further research is recommended to use observation and interviews to identify in greater detail the forms of mathematical activities performed by artists during the drawing process.

Abstract

Mathematics is often viewed as nothing more than formal formulas, even though its concepts are intuitively present in various artistic activities, including sketching faces. This study aims to describe the level of interest in mathematics among members of the SEMANGART Art Community and to identify their perceptions regarding the use of mathematical concepts in the sketching process.
