Emotional Intelligence and Academic Achievement: A study on Senior Secondary Students in Lakhimpur District of Assam

This study examines how emotional intelligence (EI) relates to academic achievement among 300 Class XI students from 15 senior secondary institutions in Lakhimpur district, Assam. Using a quantitative descriptive survey, EI was assessed with Sharma’s (2011) 60-item Emotional Intelligence Test, while academic achievement was measured using students’ earlier HSLC examination records. The reported Pearson correlation indicates a strong positive association between EI and academic achievement (r = .70, p < .01). The study also compares students by gender and rural–urban background. The descriptive results suggest differences across these groups, although several reported test statistics require verification against the original dataset. The findings point to the value of emotional support, school counselling and equitable learning opportunities. Because the design is cross-sectional, the relationship should be understood as an association rather than evidence that EI causes higher marks.

Abstract

This study examines how emotional intelligence (EI) relates to academic achievement among 300 Class XI students from 15 senior secondary institutions in Lakhimpur district, Assam. Using a quantitative descriptive survey, EI was assessed with Sharma’s (2011) 60-item Emotional Intelligence Test, while academic achievement was measured using students’ earlier HSLC examination records.
