Prevalence of Hyperhidrosis: An Australian Population Study
Hyperhidrosis is a common but under-recognised condition and this study aimed to determine its prevalence, clinical characteristics and healthcare utilisation among Australian adults. In a cross-sectional, population-based survey of 3000 Australian adults, 156 reported excessive or abnormal sweating, with 65% reporting severe disease, while younger age and student status were independently associated with hyperhidrosis. Despite the substantial burden of disease, only 49% had consulted a healthcare professional and 27% had received a formal diagnosis, highlighting a significant gap in recognition and healthcare engagement and the need for greater awareness and earlier diagnosis.
