A lattice path model for Schubert and forest polynomials: positivity and combinatorial interpretations

In this paper, we give combinatorial interpretations of (i) the Graham-positive coefficients in the expansion of double Schur polynomials in the double fundamental quasisymmetric basis and (ii) the coefficients in the expansion of Grothendieck polynomials in the grove basis. To obtain these interpretations, we construct a common lattice path model for Schubert, Grothendieck, and double Schubert polynomials and their respective quasisymmetric counterparts: forest, grove, and double forest polynomials. The first interpretation answers a question of Bergeron, Gagnon, Nadeau, Spink, and Tewari asking for an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients. It also yields formulas for the equivariant degrees of the quasisymmetric Schubert cycles introduced by Bergeron, Gagnon, Spink, and Tewari. The specialization of the second interpretation recovers Nadeau and Tewari's Schubert-to-forest formula, expressed using the rightmost representatives of their Omega-equivalence classes.
