Integrating fall detection technology in healthcare: A feasibility study of fall sensor usability

BackgroundFalls are a significant risk among stroke patients, and effective fall risk assessment and communication between hospital and primary care are essential to prevent adverse events.ObjectiveThis study evaluates current practices in fall risk assessment and documentation of falls and communication. It also explores the development and pilot testing of a digital fall sensor system to support clinicians in stroke rehabilitation.MethodsA prospective study of a stroke rehabilitation cohort (n = 31) and an assessed fall risk screening quality and information transfer across care transitions. Concurrently, technical development and laboratory usability testing of a wearable fall sensor were conducted.ResultsDocumentation of fall prevention interventions was present in 80% of cases. Only 45% of discharge reports contained relevant fall risk information for primary care providers. The fall sensor during first test detected correctly 12 of 12 fall incidents with unknown false alarm performance. During the second lab test the sensor detected correctly 8 of 12 fall incidents with no false alarms during 10 simulated movements suspected to cause false alarms. Clinical deployment was delayed due to IT infrastructure and regulatory requirements.ConclusionsThere is a critical need to standardize fall risk documentation and improve communication pathways to ensure continuity of care. Laboratory testing demonstrated promising sensor performance, but clinical validation is required before implementation can be recommended.
