Human Well-being through Teacher Education: A Conceptual Perspective

Abstract Human well-being has emerged as an important concern in contemporary education because educational quality cannot be understood solely in terms of academic achievement, examination performance, or employability. Education is fundamentally concerned with the development of human beings who are capable of living meaningful, healthy, ethical, socially connected, and fulfilling lives. In this context, teacher education occupies a strategic position because teachers influence not only learners' intellectual development but also their emotional, social, moral, and psychological well-being. This conceptual paper examines the potential of teacher education as a pathway for promoting human well-being. Drawing upon the capability approach, positive psychology, social-emotional learning, and humanistic perspectives of education, the paper conceptualizes teacher education as a transformative process that develops teachers' knowledge, competencies, dispositions, reflective capacity, and well-being. The paper proposes a conceptual framework linking teacher education, teacher well-being, well-being-oriented pedagogical competencies, supportive learning environments, and student human well-being. It argues that teacher education programmes should integrate self-awareness, emotional competence, mindfulness, resilience, empathy, ethical sensitivity, positive relationships, inclusive practices, and reflective pedagogy into their curriculum and practicum. The paper further identifies institutional culture, workload, professional autonomy, socio-economic inequalities, inadequate preparation, and examination-oriented educational systems as major challenges. The paper concludes that sustainable human well-being through education requires a systemic approach in which teacher education becomes a foundation for developing teachers who can create compassionate, inclusive, meaningful, and psychologically healthy learning environments.
