Decentralised Food Systems: Are local supply chains the future of food security?
We think food gets expensive on the farm. It doesn't. 70-75% of what you pay for food is added AFTER it leaves the farm - processing, transport, storage, retail (SOFI 2026). Yet 66.6% of Africans can't afford a healthy diet. This paper argues the problem is the "Mssing Middle" - lack of cold chains, storage and local hubs built on relational resilience. Evidence shows solar-powered local hubs can cut losses by 55% and transport emissions by 90%. Written from practitioner perspective as a food processor in Northern Nigeria.
