Study on the production of solid lipid nanoparticles system of tamanu oil (Calophyllum inophyllum) by homogenization method

Tamanu oil has been shown to contain biologically active compounds. However, the short storage life of tamanu oil limits its application. Therefore, this study aimed to create solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) to encapsulate tamanu oil using the rotor-stator homogenization method. The carrier material used in this study was Naterol SE, a mixture of glyceryl stearate, ceteareth-20, ceteareth-12, cetearyl alcohol, and cetyl palmitate. The parameters examined in this study included hot homogenization time (10, 20, 30 min), cold homogenization time (10, 20, 30 min), solid lipid concentration (2, 2.5, 3% w/w), and hot homogenization temperature (60, 70, 80°C). Suitable parameters for the process of production soil lipid nanoparticles (SLN) systems containing tamanu oil included using a rotor-stator homogenizer with a homogenization speed of 9500 rpm, hot and cold homogenization times 20 and 30 min, respectively, solid lipid concentration as 2.5% (w/ w), tamanu oil concentration as 5% (w/w) and surfactant concentration (tween 80 and span 80) as 4% (w/w) (where the ratio tween 80: span 80 as 72:28 w/w), hot homogenization temperature as 60°C. The efficiency of tamanu oil encapsulation reached the highest value of 90.8%, and the particle size of the system was 175.3 (nm). The SLNtamanu oil system showed slight phase separation when subjected to mechanical impact by centrifugation for 50 min. Through scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, it could be seen that the particles have many shapes and are mainly spherical. The results indicated that microencapsulation of tamanu oil in solid lipid nanosystems (SLNs) showed good protection ability and potential application of the product in the food and pharmaceutical fields.
