CHECKING THE BLACK HOLE : On a Viral Post, the Numbers That Hold, the Numbers That Need Care, and the Solution That Does Not Depend on Either
On X, a post circulated describing the AI industry's finances as a "trillion-dollar black hole." https://x.com/md_deepesh/status/2115999380868067500 It cited specific figures for Meta, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, CoreWeave, and SpaceX. Itcomputed a required revenue of $3.2 trillion per year to sustain a 30% margin on a $2.25trillion annual infrastructure cost. It observed that at $20 per month, that revenue wouldrequire 13.3 billion paying subscribers — more people than live on Earth. The post is vivid, and its central argument deserves to be taken seriously. This paper does three things: It states what the post gets right. It states where the numbersneed care. And it states the solution that does not depend on either.
