The Macroeconomic and Microeconomic Cost of Cognitive Distortions in the Workplace: A Systematic Review of Employee Productivity and National GDP Interconnections

Abstract ● Background: Human economic action is driven by the fulfillment of perceived deficits or needs. However, internal misinformation systems—specifically cognitive distortions—actively degrade this process by convincing individuals that their productive labor is valueless, while falsely elevating counterproductive concepts as highly valuable. This study systematically reviews how these internal cognitive distortions trigger employee apathy, reduce task competency, and ultimately scale upward to negatively impact national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and global economic performance. ● Methodology: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a rigorous systematic search was conducted across PubMed, PsycINFO, SSRN, and Google Scholar for literature published between 2016 and 2026. Studies tracking cognitive errors, workplace presenteeism, and macroeconomic models linking employee mental distress to GDP metrics were included. To ensure high empirical precision and data validity, a rigorous screening process was implemented. Non-peer-reviewed articles, preprints, and grey literature were strictly excluded. Books, commercial textbooks, and independent book chapters were also omitted due to their limitations in providing real-time data updates. Furthermore, online news media, personal blogs, and anecdotal opinion commentaries were completely excluded to mitigate subjective bias. Lastly, any studies that failed to provide quantifiable parameters connecting baseline workplace presenteeism with macroeconomic GDP indicators were excluded from final synthesis. ● Results: The synthesized data demonstrates that cognitive distortions (e.g., discounting the positive and magnification/minimization ) reduce individual work performance by up to 35% (American Psychiatric Association, 2023). On an organizational level, this manifests as extreme presenteeism, where workers remain unproductive for a significant portion of the day. Cumulatively, Gallup Panel reports (2023) show that these psychological drains cost economies billions in unplanned losses annually. On a global scale, unengaged and cognitively distressed labor accounts for an estimated 9% drain on Global GDP, accumulating to $8.9 trillion in fiscal stagnation (Gallup, 2024). ● Conclusion: Cognitive distortions represent a severe structural and macroeconomic threat, rather than just an isolated psychological issue. Because these internal distortions mimic absolute truth, affected workers cannot self-correct, causing widespread drops in national output. Mitigating this global drain requires immediate, expert-led clinical interventions and cognitive remediation programs within the corporate infrastructure to protect human capital and stabilize national GDP.
