Beyond Course Completion: How Adult Learning Providers Can Measure Skills That Transfer into Real Life and Work
Adult learning providers often report course completion, satisfaction and test scores, yet these measures say little about whether learners use new skills in their work and lives. Drawing on research on the transfer of training, habit formation and transformative learning, this article distinguishes four outcomes: knowledge acquired, skills demonstrated, application in real settings and durability over time. It proposes a practical four-step approach and discusses its use in online learning, professional development, entrepreneurship programmes and corporate training. The approach is a framework for practice, not a validated instrument.Originally published on EPALE – Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe (European Commission), 29 October 2026.
