Effective Parameters on the Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP)

Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is the most efficient method for producing ultrafine grain-size materials and improving mechanical characteristics. This research paper examines the behavior of pure copper with a circular cross-section following equal channel angular pressing, analyzing the impact of various die angles and curvature angles on the force required for pressing and the strain distribution during a single pass at room temperature. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element methods (FEMs) were employed to simulate the strain distribution across the sample utilizing Abaqus. The finite element analysis results were then compared to the experimental data from ECAP. This study examines the strain distribution and force required to press the workpiece. This was done using a 75° die angle with different curvature angles (11°, 20°, 39°), a 90° die angle with curvature angles (10°, 25°, 37°), and a 120° die angle with curvature angles (10°, 16°, 28°). At a die angle of 120° and a curvature angle of 28°, the maximum force necessary to compress the copper was 7.3 KN, with a maximum strain distribution of 1.464 recorded. The values increased as the die angle and curvature angle decreased, peaking at a die angle of 75° and a curvature angle of 11°; the force necessary to compress the sample increased significantly to 43.66 KN, while the maximum strain distribution reached 4.512.It was shown that the strain distribution of the contour and the maximum force necessary to compress a sample of pure copper are inversely proportional to the die angle and curvature angle.
