Exploring Experience through M⁵ in Meditation: From Breath Awareness to Sensation, Feeling, Thought, and Action

This is the second of seven papers in the M⁵ Life Programme. Paper 1, the 108 Breath Awareness Method, gives formal practice a boundary and treats whatever else arises (sounds, sensations, feelings, thoughts, urges to move) mainly as an occasion to return to the breath. It offers no instruction for examining that material, and existing practices cover it only in part: the body scan addresses one dimension, mental noting labels many without examining how an episode is composed, and open monitoring gives beginners no structure. This paper proposes a graded, teachable sequence that moves from sensory perception to bodily experience, feeling tone and emotion, thought and inner speech, and bodily action and speech, with awareness relevant throughout. The six steps elaborate the five M⁵ dimensions (perception, affect, cognition, action, and awareness) without adding to them, and the breath becomes a reference to alternate with, not only an object of return. Each step specifies an instruction, an illustrative observation, common difficulties, and a return. The central risk is named: differentiation can turn into dissection, an analytic self-monitoring that may increase reactivity. The design responds by preferring description to classification and retrospective review of one episode to continuous checking, and it specifies stopping rules and adaptations. Four propositions follow (finer differentiation, dereification, easier return, and clearer agency in action), each with conditions under which it would fail, together with a pilot plan for testing the coding scheme on which the first depends. No new empirical data are reported.
