The Art of Making Do as an Indicator of Decline: The Middle Class, Hyperspecialization and the Capture of Informal Ingenuity

English The art of making do (l'arte dell'arrangiarsi) is neither a national vice nor a southern virtue: it is a universal response to scarcity. The essay maps its worldwide vocabulary (arrangiarsi, jugaad, gambiarra, Système D, jua kali, blat, smekalka) and advances three claims. First: the middle class of hyperspecialized societies is sliding towards poverty and, as it slides, it is relearning how to make do, while a "reverse osmosis" pumps what it loses upwards. Second: the ingenuity produced by making do is captured and turned into profit by those who own capital; the essay reads this mechanism through Locke's labour theory of property, and generative artificial intelligence shows it in miniature, at both input and output. Third: for this reason, the spread of making do among the middle class can be read as an indicator of the descending phase of the secular cycle described by Peter Turchin's cliodynamics. Using a comparative method in the manner of big history, the essay draws on ILO, OECD and World Inequality Report 2026 data, Jason Pine's ethnography of Naples, François Jacob's evolutionary tinkering and a rereading of "homo homini lupus" in Hobbes. It is an interpretive essay, not a demonstration, and it closes with three open questions, starting with whether making do can be measured.
