Body Scrub Formulation Using Natural Ingredients White Glutinous Rice (Oryza sativa L. var. glutinosa) and Olive Oil

Body scrub is a cosmetic preparation widely used in skincare routines to facilitate the removal of dead skin cells through exfoliation. White glutinous rice (Oryza sativa L. var. glutinosa) and olive oil (Oleum olivarum) are natural ingredients that may improve the functional properties of body scrub formulations. White glutinous rice contains antioxidant compounds that may support collagen synthesis, which plays an essential role in maintaining skin elasticity. Meanwhile, olive oil is recognized for its moisturizing properties and its potential to improve the appearance of dry and dull skin. This study aimed to develop a body scrub formulation containing white glutinous rice and olive oil and to evaluate its moisturizing effectiveness on the skin. An experimental study was conducted by incorporating different amounts of white glutinous rice and olive oil into three formulations: F1 (5 g and 0.5 mL), F2 (10 g and 1 mL), and F3 (15 g and 1.5 mL), respectively. The formulations were evaluated based on their physical characteristics, including organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, emulsion type, spreadability, adhesion, skin moisture content, and irritation potential. The results showed that the formulations exhibited a white-to-cream color, a characteristic aroma of white glutinous rice, a semisolid consistency, and a coarse texture. The pH values ranged from 6.2 to 6.5, and all formulations demonstrated good homogeneity. The formulations were identified as oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, with spreadability values ranging from 6.0 to 6.7 cm² and adhesion times of 4.7–6.4 seconds. Skin moisture levels increased to 54.2–60%, while none of the formulations produced observable skin irritation. In conclusion, white glutinous rice and olive oil can be successfully incorporated into body scrub preparations. Among the tested formulations, F2, containing 10 g of white glutinous rice and 1 mL of olive oil, demonstrated the most favorable overall characteristics and was identified as the optimal formulation.
