Ionic Liquids‐Mediated Decarboxylation Reactions

ABSTRACT Decarboxylation is a key process in organic chemistry, wherein a carboxyl group is removed in the form of carbon dioxide. Due to cutting‐edge research in the field of decarboxylation, the green chemistry matrices involving methods have always attracted chemists. Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) demonstrated a very efficient role for the decarboxylation reactions with their unbeatable properties, like negligible vapor pressure and their tunable nature, which can be adjusted to help in dissolving substrates. The adjustable properties of ILs further express them as designer solvents, and additionally, their hydrogen‐bonding capabilities speed up the organic reactions, leading to enhanced performances. Their nonvolatile nature further makes them eco‐friendly and easy to handle, as the product gets separated effortlessly, and hence can be recycled and reused. Current review focuses on the investigation studies articulating ILs in decarboxylation reactions, with scaffolds bearing carboxyl groups such as carboxylic acids, β ‐keto acids, malonic acids, and aromatic carboxylic acids. Basically, ILs are a big step forward in decarboxylation chemistry offering a flexible and eco‐friendly platform. The ongoing research is bound to uncover even more exciting possibilities for sustainable synthesis, making ILs an eco‐friendly tool in modern organic chemistry.
