Exploring the governance of collaborative networks in sport-for-development and peace: Strategies and challenges in the Common Goal case
Despite the growing emphasis on collaborative networks within Sport-for-Development and Peace (SDP) organizations, little is known about how these collaborative networks are governed. Drawing on network governance theory, our case study examines Common Goal’s strategies and challenges in managing the SDP network. We identified six core strategies and three challenges through analyzing archival documents and semi-structured interviews with key individuals. We found that Common Goal’s cohesive brand identity played a crucial role in establishing shared goals and legitimacy, particularly in addressing funding and visibility challenges in the SDP field. We also reveal tensions within the network, including unequal power dynamics, competing goals, and varied prioritization of growth. By applying a micro-governance perspective, we contribute to network governance and SDP literature, highlighting the complex dynamics of inter-organizational relationships within collaborative networks.
