Methodology to assess the effectiveness of measures to ensure the stability of technological process of industrial enterprises during voltage dips

Today, industrial plant disruptions are often associated with short-term voltage dips in power grids. Numerous technical solutions exist to resolve these dips within a short period of time. However, the choice of a particular emergency response in most cases is not consistent with the stability of the enterprise technological process. Consequently, despite the rapid clearing of the voltage dip, the production process is still disrupted, leading to product defects and losses. Therefore, the primary goal of this study is to ensure the stable operation of electrical equipment with complex technological processes during voltage dips. The presented methodology is based on the process stability time concept developed by the international research group CIGRE, CIRED, and UIE. It enables to selection of the most effective measure to mitigate voltage dips at a given industrial facility, based on determining the critical process stability time. Simulation of the electrical system of an oil refinery using PSCAD has been used to test the methodology. As a result of the modeling, values of the critical stability times of process units have been obtained, and the critical stability time of the technological process has been determined. Short-circuit clearance time scenarios using relay protection and automation systems have been examined using Gantt charts. The developed methodology has been validated through a practical example. Its effectiveness to enhance the resilience of the technological process against voltage dips has been demonstrated. The developed methodology enhances the operational stability of an industrial enterprise with a complex technological cycle. It enables the selection of the most effective emergency response measures aimed at ensuring voltage stability of electrical power system. The results obtained can be used by engineering companies that design power supply systems for industrial enterprises.
