Elastosynth—An Open-Source Software Package for the Generation of Realistic In-Silico RF Data for Ultrasound Elastography

Ultrasound elastography provides quantitative tissue information, yet displacement algorithm validation is hampered by lack of clinical ground truth and simplified phantoms. Current in silico FEA-FIELD II approaches are computationally prohibitive for large-scale data generation and lack heterogeneous tissue support. This paper introduces Elastosynth, an open-source package with modular architecture: procedural phantom generation, a custom lightweight finite element solver, and optimized FIELD-II RF simulation. The generator employs Monte-Carlo placement and superpixel heterogeneity workflows for complex stiffness fields with tunable inclusion properties. The bespoke C++/Armadillo FE engine supports heterogeneous 2D simulations, bypassing commercial preprocessing overhead while efficiently computing displacements under prescribed boundary conditions. A lateral windowing scheme reduces the RF simulation time 60-fold, enabling mass generation of reasonably realistic in silico phantoms. Supporting automated batch processing, Elastosynth facilitates statistically significant evaluation of displacement estimation techniques, addressing a critical gap in elastography and enabling advancement of tissue motion tracking and quasi-static ultrasound elastography techniques.

Abstract

Ultrasound elastography provides quantitative tissue information, yet displacement algorithm validation is hampered by lack of clinical ground truth and simplified phantoms. Current in silico FEA-FIELD II approaches are computationally prohibitive for large-scale data generation and lack heterogeneous tissue support. This paper introduces Elastosynth, an open-source package with modular architecture: procedural phantom generation, a custom lightweight finite element solver, and optimized FIELD-II RF simulation. The generator employs Monte-Carlo placement and superpixel heterogeneity workflows for complex stiffness fields with tunable inclusion properties. The bespoke C++/Armadillo FE engine supports heterogeneous 2D simulations, bypassing commercial preprocessing overhead while efficiently computing displacements under prescribed boundary conditions. A lateral windowing scheme reduces the RF simulation time 60-fold, enabling mass generation of reasonably realistic in silico phantoms. Supporting automated batch processing, Elastosynth facilitates statistically significant evaluation of displacement estimation techniques, addressing a critical gap in elastography and enabling advancement of tissue motion tracking and quasi-static ultrasound elastography techniques.
