Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Neem Leaf Extract
ABSTRACT This research demonstrates eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract without toxic chemicals. Neem extract acts as reducing and stabilizing agent. Synthesis is confirmed by visual brown color change and UV-Visible peak at 435nm (Surface Plasmon Resonance). The method is low-cost (Rs.800), simple, and suitable for undergraduate laboratories. It has potential application in low-cost water purification for rural areas. Keywords: Green synthesis; Silver nanoparticles; Neem leaf extract; Waterpurification. 1. INTRODUCTION Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising field with significant applications in environmental remediation. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are known for their unique physicochemical properties, including high surface area, antimicrobial activity and excellent catalytic efficiency. However, conventional physical and chemical synthesis methods involve hazardous chemicals, high energy consumption and environmental risks. Green synthesis using plant extracts offers a sustainable, eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative. Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids and phenolics, which act as reducing and stabilizing agents for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. This project focuses on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using neem leaf extract and evaluates their potential for water purification. 2 original Neem extraction photos (light golden & dark brown) done at home in Madurai. Extraction completed, cost Rs.800 vs chemical Rs.8000. Final AgNO3 mixing in progress at college lab. Literature review 15 papers. Expected SPR 420-450nm, color change to dark brown confirms AgNPs.
