Digital Self-Regulation and Gamified Learning Approaches for Enhancing Productive Digital Engagement: A Review

Abstract - The increasing use of smartphones, social media, and digital learning technologies has created both opportunities and challenges for students. Digital devices support communication and learning, but digital distractions, procrastination, and uncontrolled use may interfere with academic activities and time management. At the same time, gamification has been explored as an approach for supporting motivation, participation, and engagement in educational settings. This review examines two related themes: digital self-regulation and management of digital distractions, and gamification for educational engagement. Six selected studies published between 2023 and 2024 were examined according to their objectives, methods, findings, and limitations. The reviewed literature indicates the relevance of awareness, self-monitoring, personalization, behavioral interventions, and responsible digital-use strategies. The gamification literature indicates that engagement outcomes depend on how game elements are designed and aligned with educational objectives and learner characteristics. The comparison identifies a research gap in the limited integration of digital self-regulation with meaningful educational engagement. The review proposes future research involving personalized interventions, measurable behavioral and engagement outcomes, diverse student populations, and integrated approaches to productive digital engagement. Keywords— Digital self-regulation, digital distraction, smartphone use, gamification, student engagement, productive digital engagement.
