Project HYPNOS: A Closed-Loop Biopotential Telemetry and 40 Hz Gamma Neuro-Modulation Interface for Real-Time REM Detection and Bidirectional Ocular Communication

Commercial sleep masks designed for lucid dream induction have historically failed due to open-loop timer architectures that trigger stimuli without physiological feedback. Project HYPNOS introduces a non-invasive, closed-loop cyber-physical neuro-telemetry system engineered for real-time Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep detection, frontotemporal Gamma entrainment, and bidirectional dream-to-hardware communication. Utilizing a dual-core ESP32-S3 microcontroller and a 16-bit TI ADS1115 sigma-delta ADC sampling at 128 Hz, the architecture cross-references four physiological modalities: corneo-retinal standing dipole potentials via surface Electrooculography (EOG), 940 nm near-infrared corneal reflectance, somatic muscle atonia via a 6-axis IMU, and autonomic heart rate variability via photoplethysmography (PPG). Upon verifying stable phasic REM sleep through a 7-stage Finite State Machine (FSM) and digital Butterworth band-pass filtering (0.5–8.0 Hz), the system delivers phase-locked 40 Hz multimodal sensory stimuli (650 nm deep-red palpebral photic pulses and bone-conducted binaural beats) to entrain the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC). Subsequently, the DSP core monitors for pre-agreed Left-Right-Left-Right (L-R-L-R) ocular saccade signatures (Konkoly Protocol), enabling two-way communication, dynamic habituation ramping, and Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) while preventing premature awakening.

Abstract

Commercial sleep masks designed for lucid dream induction have historically failed due to open-loop timer architectures that trigger stimuli without physiological feedback. Project HYPNOS introduces a non-invasive, closed-loop cyber-physical neuro-telemetry system engineered for real-time Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep detection, frontotemporal Gamma entrainment, and bidirectional dream-to-hardware communication. Utilizing a dual-core ESP32-S3 microcontroller and a 16-bit TI ADS1115 sigma-delta ADC sampling at 128 Hz, the architecture cross-references four physiological modalities: corneo-retinal standing dipole potentials via surface Electrooculography (EOG), 940 nm near-infrared corneal reflectance, somatic muscle atonia via a 6-axis IMU, and autonomic heart rate variability via photoplethysmography (PPG). Upon verifying stable phasic REM sleep through a 7-stage Finite State Machine (FSM) and digital Butterworth band-pass filtering (0.5–8.0 Hz), the system delivers phase-locked 40 Hz multimodal sensory stimuli (650 nm deep-red palpebral photic pulses and bone-conducted binaural beats) to entrain the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC). Subsequently, the DSP core monitors for pre-agreed Left-Right-Left-Right (L-R-L-R) ocular saccade signatures (Konkoly Protocol), enabling two-way communication, dynamic habituation ramping, and Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) while preventing premature awakening.
