Clinical, radiological and histopathological features of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors seen at a tertiary care centre in western India

Background: Clinical, radiological and histopathological features of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors seen at a tertiary care centre in western India in the recent decade. Aims: To study the prevalence, distribution, clinical, radiological and histopathological features of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors seen at our tertiary care centre.Materials and Methods: The study is a retrospective, cohort, observational study. Clinical, radiological and histopathological records of patients with a biopsy proven diagnosis of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors from 2011 to 2021 were reviewed. The study period was 2023 to 2024.Statistical Analysis: Statistical analysis was done using Microsoft excel work-sheet and statistical parameters of percentages, mean and median. Results: 55 patients with epithelial lacrimal gland tumours were reviewed. On histopathology majority were pleomorphic adenoma (PA) (56.4%) followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) (30.9%), adenocarcinoma (5%), carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CEPA)(4%) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (4%). The age showed a wide distribution from 14 years to 68 years with a mean of 37.5 years. The mean age in the benign and malignant groups was 36.2 years and 34.88 years respectively. The male: female ratio was 1.9:1 with a male preponderance in PA group and adenoid-cystic carcinoma groups. Proptosis and inferomedial globe displacement with palpable mass in lacrimal fossa were the most common presenting symptoms. On radiology infiltration and bony erosion was seen more commonly in the malignant group. Conclusions: Prevalence and diagnostic distribution of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors from western India in the recent decade is presented. The clinical, radiological and histopathological features of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors co-related with each other. Key Messages: Clinical, radiological and histopathological correlation of primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors seen at a tertiary care centre in western India in the recent decade.
