Global Research Trends in Distress Among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : A Bibliometric Analysis

ABSTRACT Diabetes distress is a psychological condition experienced by individuals with diabetes mellitus that may adversely affect adherence to treatment and self-management behaviors. Recent evidence indicates that diabetes distress has gained increasing attention in the scientific community, as nearly half of adult patients with diabetes experience this condition. However, studies mapping global research trends on diabetes distress remain limited. This study aimed to analyze publication trends, leading contributing countries, and emerging research themes related to diabetes distress among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database. Data retrieval was performed on July 24, 2026, using the keywords “Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” OR “DM Type 2” AND “Distress”. A total of 514 relevant articles were identified and analyzed. Scopus Analyze was used to examine annual publication outputs and the most productive countries, while the data were exported in CSV format and further analyzed and visualized using VOSviewer to identify research clusters and frequently occurring keywords. The findings revealed a steady increase in diabetes distress publications over time, with the highest number of publications recorded in 2024 (66 articles). The United States was identified as the most productive country, contributing 120 publications. Network visualization analysis identified four major research clusters: clinical conditions and diabetes complications, mental health and psychological burden, self-management and patient education, and quality of life and lifestyle management. Overlay visualization demonstrated a shift in research focus from symptoms and diabetes-related complications toward the development of assessment instruments and the evaluation of interventions aimed at reducing diabetes distress among patients with T2DM. Keywords: Bibliometric Analysis, Diabetes Distress, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, VOSviewer. OR “DM Type 2” AND “Distress”.
