NEW GENERATIONS OF ANTIBIOTICS AND ALKALOIDS: PROMISING APPROACHES TO COMBATING ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

This is one of the current research areas in modern medicine and pharmaceutical chemistry. A review published in Nature Reviews Microbiology in 2025 emphasizes the need to develop antibacterial compounds with novel chemical structures and mechanisms of action to combat antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Plant-derived alkaloids are also attracting scientific interest due to their antibacterial properties and potential to enhance the effects of antibiotics. Research is examining the effects of certain natural compounds on bacterial cell activity, their potential to inhibit biofilm formation, and their possible role in reducing bacterial resistance to existing antibiotics. Therefore, developing new generations of antibiotics, studying the biological activity of alkaloids, and identifying the relationship between their chemical structures and antimicrobial effects are considered promising areas of scientific research.
