The Non-Exclusivity of Categorical Limit Roles: Diagram-Relative Representation, Constant Diagrams, and Mathematical Structure
Categorical limits are conventionally introduced as universal objects associated with diagrams in a category. Although the uniqueness of limits up to unique isomorphism is widely emphasized, a different feature of limit theory receives comparatively little explicit philosophical attention: the same object can serve as the limit of multiple diagrams, including diagrams of different shapes and with substantially different morphism configurations. More strikingly, every object in an arbitrary category can be made the limit of a suitably chosen diagram of any nonempty connected small indexing shape, namely the corresponding constant identity diagram. Dually, it can also serve as the colimit of that diagram. This article develops a philosophical analysis of this phenomenon. It distinguishes diagram shape, concrete diagram, limiting cone, limit apex, and the explanatory significance of a limit representation. It establishes the mathematical compatibility between two facts that may initially appear to pull in opposite directions: the uniqueness of the limiting cone for a fixed diagram, and the non-exclusivity of limit roles across different diagrams. By examining the cone-presheaf formulation of limits, the article further shows that distinct diagrams with a common limiting apex induce naturally isomorphic cone functors, without thereby becoming isomorphic diagrams. The central philosophical argument is that limit status should be understood as a diagram-relative relational role rather than as an exclusive intrinsic classification of an object. The article distinguishes formal limit admissibility from structurally informative and mathematically explanatory representation. This distinction refines the interpretation of categorical structuralism and clarifies why formally valid universal-property characterizations need not all carry the same mathematical significance. The mathematical propositions used are established consequences of standard category theory; the proposed contribution lies in their systematic philosophical interpretation and conceptual organization.
