Ethnic Fragmentation and National Security Outcomes in Nigeria

Nigeria’s ethnic fragmentation has increasingly intersected with political exclusion, weak governance and socio-economic inequalities, raising concerns about its implications for national security. This study examines how ethnic fragmentation shapes national security outcomes in Nigeria and assesses the extent to which governance quality and economic marginalisation mediate this relationship. It specifically analyses the influence of ethnic fragmentation on identity-based conflicts, insurgency, communal violence, farmer-herder conflicts, banditry and separatist movements, while examining the roles of governance and economic conditions. The study adopts a critical literature review methodology, synthesising evidence from peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, government publications and reports of international organisations, with emphasis on literature published between 2020 and 2026. Findings indicate that ethnic diversity does not inherently produce insecurity. Rather, insecurity becomes more pronounced where ethnic identities are politicised and reinforced by weak institutions, exclusionary governance, corruption, unequal resource distribution and economic marginalisation. The study concludes that the security consequences of ethnic fragmentation are largely shaped by the quality of governance and inclusiveness of economic opportunities. It recommends strengthening accountable and inclusive institutions, ensuring equitable resource distribution, expanding economic opportunities across regions and discouraging political manipulation of ethnic identities to promote national cohesion and sustainable security.
