Development of a Biometric Fingerprint-Based Staff Attendance Management System Integrated with the Institutional Management System (IMS) for ANSPOLY Mgbakwu
This study focused on the development of a biometric fingerprint-based staff attendance management system integrated with the existing Information Management System (IMS) of the Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu. Staff attendance monitoring at the Polytechnic currently relies on manual processes, resulting in inaccurate records, vulnerability to impersonation, and difficulties in verifying staff presence for administrative, payroll, and performance evaluation purposes. These inefficiencies undermine institutional accountability, administrative control, and fair human resource management. This work develops a system that leverages a reliable biometric technology, to uniquely identify staff attendance to work through fingerprint scanning, it will automatically capture and transmits attendance data to a centralized online database, and enable seamless integration for real-time tracking, automated report generation, and enhanced data accuracy without being biased. The methodology adopted is Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM). The application uses Python and Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP), to implement the back-end to handle the server operations while Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Java Script and CSS were used for the front-end to develop the application and MySqli (My Structural Query Language Improved) as the relational database. WAMP (Window Apache MySql and PHP) server was used for the hosting and testing. System testing focused on the functionality of the login interface, staff registration, fingerprint attendance capture, database storage and retrieval, and attendance report generation. The developed system provides an automated approach to recording attendance events and generating attendance reports, reducing reliance on manual data entry and compilation. However, quantitative performance measures, including fingerprint matching accuracy, false acceptance rate, false rejection rate, and response time, require validation through documented test results. The study demonstrates a strong integration of the biometric attendance management with institutional information systems to strengthen staff attendance monitoring and administrative efficiency at ANSPOLY.
