Ayurveda Therapy as Management of Central Serous Chorioretinopathy: A Case Report

Aim and background: Etiologically, central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is classified under miscellaneous acquired maculopathies.Central serous chorioretinopathy is characterized by spontaneous serous detachment of neurosensory retinae in the macular region with or without retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) detachment. In modern medicine, there is conservative treatment (to observe for 3-4 months until the fluid resolves), or in an emergency, focal laser therapy is suggested, which can cause permanent damage to neuro-retina leading to impaired vision. In Ayurveda, it can be correlated with Vataja Timira according to symptoms that are blurred vision and metamorphopsia.Case and intervention: A 46-year-old male with complaints of blurred vision and epiphora was then diagnosed with CSCR in the left eye.He underwent Ayurveda management, including oral medication, Nasya as Shodhana treatment, and Akshitarpana and Anjana Karma as Kriyakalpa.Outcomes: After 1 year and 8 months of treatment, 95% improvement in CSCR was confirmed by optical coherence tomography. Conclusion: Ayurvedic therapy effectively resolves macular edema over a gradual time period with marked outcome.
