The Anglish System: The Compiler and the Anglish Virtual Machine
The Anglish System is the compiler and the virtual machine that together run an Anglish program. Theprogram is authoritative, and the compiler never adds to it. The compiler parses the program, analyzes itsstructure and refuses it when something is missing, with a suggested line for each hole. It then saturates theprogram, deciding what every declared element means from closed sets and recording each decision in a lockthe author reviews. A framer writes a contract for every task, and an AI coder writes the body of each taskagainst its contract. The compiler is therefore deterministic up to the contract and verified beyond it. TheAnglish virtual machine (AngVM) runs the result. Each space runs inside a capsule, which is generated codethat holds the space’s data, hands each arrival to the body of the task it wakes, and applies what the bodyreturns. Everything a body does passes through the capsule, so the capsule evaluates every assertion of a taskat that task’s firing, over the data as the firing began and as it would leave them, and every assertion of adatum whenever that datum changes. The capsule decides what a firing writes and the machine records it.Each assertion is a guarantee, whose failure refuses the firing’s changes, or a report, whose failure is recorded,as the deployment sheet settles. A failure at a boundary, in a body or of an assertion goes into the record ofthe firing and wakes the recovery the author wrote. A body that dies is restarted by the machine’s keeperwithin a budget and then delivered to its recovery as a failure of the body. The design has been walked end toend by hand on today’s machine for two programs of the golden corpus, and this report states it as the walkfound it. The contract between the compiler and the machine therefore has four simple parts, which are thedata of each space, the checks, two settings and the failures. This report is the authoritative statement of thesystem, and the companion report, The Anglish Language, describes the language.
