An Electron Backscatter Diffraction Investigation on the Role of Ti/SiC Particles on the Microstructural Evolution and Tribological Behavior of 2205 duplex Stainless Steel Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting

In this study, the role of Ti/SiC particles in the microstructural evolution and tribological behavior of 2205 DSS fabricated by selective laser melting was investigated by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction. The addition of SiC particles markedly enhanced dislocation density and the fraction of γ phase. After solution treatment, the dislocation density was reduced and the α phase formed. With the addition of Ti or Ti + SiC particles, ultrafine grains formed, but the dislocation density was low. The fraction of α phase increased with the addition of Ti particles. After solution treatment, with the addition of Ti particles, the grain size considerably increased, and no γ phase was observed. With the addition of Ti + SiC particles, the grain size was relatively fine, and the γ phase formed after solution treatment. The high dislocation density caused by the addition of SiC particles contributed to increased hardness and wear resistance. With the addition of Ti or Ti + SiC particles, the low dislocation density and high fraction of unmelted defects resulted in reduced hardness and wear resistance. After solution treatment, the reduction in dislocation density and increase in grain size led to reduced hardness and wear resistance compared with those before treatment.
