Next-Generation Library Services Using AI and Big Data

Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data, academic libraries are evolving from traditional repositories into state-of-the-art, user-centric knowledge and research hubs. This chapter highlights key applications of AI and Big Data in academic libraries and explores the conceptual evolution of library services from Library 1.0 to Library 4.0. Technologies such as chatbots and virtual reference services, personalised recommendations, automated cataloguing and metadata generation, intelligent search capabilities, and research and learning analytics are all enabled by AI. Through Big Data analytics, libraries can better understand user behaviour, enhance collection development, maximise resource utilisation, and facilitate datadriven and predictive decision-making. Emerging technologies like blockchain, cloud computing, robotics, and the Internet of Things further support the development of smart library infrastructure. In India, technology-enabled library services are being facilitated by initiatives such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), e-ShodhSindhu, and Shodhganga. However, challenges such as data privacy, security, ethical bias, copyright issues, infrastructure, costs, interoperability, and a shortage of skilled personnel remain significant concerns. This chapter highlights the need for curriculum reform in Library and Information Science (LIS), emphasising areas such as artificial intelligence knowledge, data analytics, digital curation, user experience design, computer programming fundamentals, and continuous professional development. It concludes that ethical practices, ongoing training, and collaboration among librarians, technologists, educators, and policymakers can facilitate the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence and big data, thereby enhancing teaching, learning, research, and innovation in higher education.
