Mikhail Naiburg: A Biographical Reconstruction in the Context of F.I. Chaliapin’s Artistic Career
This article reconstructs the biography of a theater figure M.A. Naiburg and defines his role in the artistic life of F.I. Chaliapin throughout their long acquaintance — from their youth to the end of Chaliapin’s career in 1936. The study aims to provide a comprehensive attribution of M.A. Naiburg’s personality (establishing biographical data and resolving discrepancies in the spelling of his surname in the sources) based on archival materials introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time. The primary source is M.A. Naiburg’s personal file from the State Archive of Khabarovsk Krai, which includes his autobiography, a questionnaire, a passport petition, and the reports of the Bureau for Russian Emigrants in the Manchurian Empire. Supplementary sources include publications in the newspaper Nasha Zarya from 1936 and a newly discovered photograph of M.A. Naiburg. The article traces the artist’s career from its beginning in Kazan to his work in Moscow theaters and subsequent emigration to Harbin. A wide range of his theatrical professions is identified, including chorister, prompter, opera comprimario, director, and property master. It is established that M.A. Naiburg met and worked with F.I. Chaliapin at various stages of his life. Their acquaintance began in Kazan in the 1880s and later continued during their collaboration in an Ufa theatrical enterprise, where M.A. Naiburg played a crucial role in F.I. Chaliapin’s operatic stage debut in 1890. Later, their paths crossed again in Tiflis, where they lived and worked together. However, their connection did not end there: a previously unknown meeting between them in Kazan in May 1899 has been established, and their subsequent meeting in Harbin in 1936 is documentarily confirmed. The scholarly novelty lies in the introduction of documentary evidence that allows us to reconstruct the biography of a forgotten artist and, through its example, reveals the operational mechanisms of provincial theatrical enterprises and the fates of Russian cultural emigration in China. A conclusion is drawn about the significance of M.A. Naiburg for studying the creative environment that shaped F.I. Chaliapin and the effectiveness of working with provincial archives in addressing biographical issues in the history of Russian culture.
