Redefinitions of Coelosternus Sahlberg, 1823 and Graphonotatus Anderson, new replacement name for Graphonotus Chevrolat, 1880 (not Agassiz, 1846), with description of new Circum-Caribbean species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cryptorhynchinae)

The genus Coelosternus Sahlberg, 1823 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cryptorhynchinae) is redefined as a circum-Caribbean genus characterized by small, connate tarsal claws, a visible scutellar shield and association with plants in the subfamily Theophrastoideae of the Primulaceae, based on the correct identification of Coelosternus balteatus Sahlberg, 1823, the type species of the genus. Six new species of Coelosternus are described: C. jacquiniae Anderson, new species (Florida and the Bahamas); C. alamedai Anderson, new species (Cuba); C. impressiventris Anderson, new species (Cuba), C. grandis Anderson, new species (Cuba), C. ivieorum Anderson, new species (Dominican Republic) and, C. magnificus Anderson, new species (Mexico and Guatemala). Coelosternus balteatus is redescribed and reported from the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, St. Lucia and U.S. Virgin Islands. Specimens of C. balteatus from Puerto Rico are associated with Jacquinia arborea Vahl; C. jacquiniae develops in the berries of Jacquinia keyensis Mez; C. alamedai is associated with Bonellia stenophylla (Urb.) B.Ståhl and Källersjö; and C. magnificus has been intercepted at U.S. ports in a seed of an undetermined species of Jacquinia and on “duruche”, Bonellia macrocarpa (Cav.) B.Ståhl and Källersjö. Diagnostic characters and images of habitus and male genitalia for each species are presented and discussed. Graphonotus variisquamis Champion, 1906 is moved to Bothrobatys Schönherr as Bothrobatys variisquamis (Champion, 1906), new combination. The junior homonym Graphonotus Chevrolat, 1880 (not Agassiz, 1846) (type species Cryptorhynchus albocaudatus Rosenschoeld) is removed from synonymy with Coelosternus and the replacement name Graphonotatus Anderson, new replacement name is proposed. Resulting nomenclatural changes are discussed.
