A viewpoint on knowledge sabotage: structured literature review, new survey instrument and recommendations by the concept’s developer

Purpose This viewpoint aims to analyze the current state of research on knowledge sabotage from the concept developer’s perspective and introduces a new measurement instrument. Design/methodology/approach In addition to the author’s personal reflections, the methods include a structured literature review of 24 empirical studies and a survey of 204 full-time employees recruited from the CloudResearch Connect crowdsourcing platform. Findings Research on knowledge sabotage has been steadily expanding. The construct is well suited to serve as a mediator but should not be used as an antecedent of personality traits or as a moderator. Future studies should focus more on the outcomes of knowledge sabotage, measure it on a seven- or, preferably, nine-point Likert-type scale and employ qualitative methods. Researchers seeking a general measure of knowledge sabotage may use either the previous or the new scale, but those aiming to examine its dimensions should rely on the new instrument. Practical implications Knowledge sabotage is a widespread phenomenon with severe consequences at multiple levels. It arises from individual-specific factors such as psychological states, personality traits and personal motivations, as well as workplace dynamics involving coworkers, supervisors and subordinates. For victims, it leads to psychological distress, relational breakdowns, performance setbacks, career harm and financial loss. Perpetrators may also face career repercussions. At the organizational level, knowledge sabotage produces both direct and indirect financial losses. In addition, knowledge sabotage negatively affects third parties and society as a whole. Originality/value This viewpoint offers a novel framework and is recommended reading for scholars interested in advancing the study of knowledge sabotage.
