COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY VERSUS KINESIO TAPING IN PATIENTS WITH CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Background of The Study: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment neuropathy caused by the compression of the median nerve. Pain, Paraesthesia, and numbness are the symptoms. It occurs in 139 per 100000 people per year. It is more common in female than male. Increases with age in males. Shock wave and ultrasound can be given to treat CTS. Objective of The Study: The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Extracorporeal Shock wave therapy Versus Kinesio taping in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Methodology of The Study: This experimental study was conducted in VR PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC. On the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 30 subjects were randomly selected. subjects included both men and women with CTS more than 3 months, age between 40-60 years. Those excluded were with the history of diabetes mellitus, polyneuropathy, inflammatory joint disease.20 subjects With CTS were divided into two groups. Group A and Group B consisted of 10 subjects each. Group A: Received shockwave therapy treatment given for 8 weeks (2 - 3 sessions/week) Group B: Received kinesio-taping treatment was given for 8 weeks (2-3 sessions/week) Outcome Measures: Boston carpal tunnel syndrome questionnaire (BCTQ) Dynamometer. Result: This study showed statistical improvement in pain reduction and functional improvement of carpal tunnel syndrome in both group A and group B. but there is significant improvement seen in group A (ESWT)comparative to group B (Kinesio tapping). Conclusion: The present study concluded that the Group A (ESWT along with tendon gliding exercise) shows better improvement in pain reduction, improve symptoms and functional status in patients with CTS.
