A CONCEPTUAL STUDY ON THE ROLE OF VIRUDDHA AHARA IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF KSHUDRA KUSHTHA

Ayurveda considers Ahara as one of the fundamental pillars responsible for the maintenance of health. Improper dietary practices, particularly Viruddha Ahara, have been described as important etiological factors for several diseases, including Kushtha. Viruddha Ahara refers not merely to incompatible food combinations but also to incompatibility arising from the place, season, digestive capacity, quantity, processing, potency, sequence, combination and method of consumption of food. Classical Ayurvedic literature describes Kushtha as a disorder involving Tridosha along with multiple Dhatus, particularly Tvak, Rakta, Mamsa and Lasika. Kshudra Kushtha represents a group of minor varieties of Kushtha with diverse clinical presentations. The present conceptual review focuses specifically on the role of Viruddha Ahara in the etiopathogenesis of Kshudra Kushtha. Classical descriptions of incompatible dietary practices have been analysed in relation to Agnidushti, Ama formation, Dosha Prakopa, Srotodushti and Dhatu Dushti. Particular attention has been given to frequently described dietary factors such as Viruddha Annapan, excessive intake of Guru-Snigdha foods, consumption of curd, fish, new grains, excessive Lavana and Amla substances, and inappropriate combinations or sequences of food. From a contemporary perspective, repeated unhealthy dietary patterns may contribute to metabolic disturbances, inflammatory processes and alteration of physiological homeostasis; however, these associations should be regarded as possible explanatory parallels rather than direct equivalence between Ayurvedic and modern disease concepts. Understanding Viruddha Ahara may therefore provide a useful conceptual framework for dietary prevention and etiological assessment in Kshudra Kushtha.
