"At least, experiment, kahit pointless": Ang Punto ng Eksperimentasyon sa Wika at Anyo sa mga Tulang Taglish ni Tinio ("At least, experiment, kahit pointless": The Point of Experimentation in Language and Form in Tinio's Taglish Poems)

Sa sariling mga salita ni Tinio: “[M]y imaginative life commuted continuously between English and Tagalog, between foreign landscapes and fixtures and native vistas and the so-called “local color,” between the high-falutin’ and the down-to-earth, between the abstruse and the simple-mindedly lucid, between the trying-to-be-witty and the probably-quite-corny, between the ivory towerish and the plastic towery, and—to put it bluntly—between the “pa-sophisticated” and “pa-deep” and the downright pedestrian.” English Abstract: It is often said that Tinio invented Taglish poetry; although we might wonder why, despite this attribution, he wrote only five Taglish poems. Nevertheless, these poems still stand out, in terms of language use, among his entire body of poems, and quite possibly, in the history of contemporary Filipino poetry. In this essay, I explore Tinio's Taglish poems primarily in relation to his employment of language and form in poetry that crosses over into, or otherwise tends toward, hybrid and liminal spaces as sites of experimentation. In Tinio's own words: “[M]y imaginative life commuted continuously between English and Tagalog, between foreign landscapes and fixtures and native vistas and the so-called “local color,” between the high-falutin’ and the down-to-earth, between the abstruse and the simple-mindedly lucid, between the trying-to-be-witty and the probably-quite-corny, between the ivory towerish and the plastic towery, and—to put it bluntly—between the “pa-sophisticated” and “pa-deep” and the downright pedestrian.”
