PLANT MEDIATED SYNTHESIS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES FROM PLAGIOCHASMA RUPESTRE AND ITS ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTY

The present study aimed to investigate the green synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using Plagiochasma rupestre plant extract. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized using UV–Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). UV–Visible analysis showed a characteristic surface plasmon resonance peak at approximately 420 nm, indicating the formation of silver nanoparticles. XRD analysis revealed prominent diffraction peaks at approximately 38°, 44°, 64°, and 77°, corresponding to the (111), (200), (220), and (311) planes, respectively, confirming the crystalline face-centered cubic structure of metallic silver. EDS analysis supported the presence of silver in the synthesized nanoparticle preparation. SEM analysis revealed predominantly irregular and unevenly shaped nanoparticles with some aggregation. The measured particle size ranged from 40.47 to 51.54 nm, with an average particle size of approximately 46.55 nm. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The highest zone of inhibition was observed against E. coli (16 mm), followed by B. subtilis (13 mm), K. pneumoniae (11 mm), and P. aeruginosa (10 mm).
