Linguopragmatic and linguocultural features of speech etiquette in English and Uzbek
The article presents a comparative linguopragmatic and linguocultural analysis of speech etiquette in English and Uzbek. It examines not only the semantic content of address forms, greetings, requests, gratitude, apologies and leave-taking formulas, but also their social and pragmatic functions. The analysis shows that English commonly encodes politeness through modal constructions, conventional indirectness and mitigation, whereas Uzbek makes extensive use of the sen/siz distinction, honorific forms, kinship-based address terms and culturally established goodwill formulas. The study argues that lexical equivalence does not necessarily produce pragmatic equivalence and identifies several areas of partial correspondence and pragmatic lacunarity. The findings are relevant to contrastive linguistics, translation studies and the development of pragmatic competence in English-language teaching.
