ETHNO PHARMACOLOGY AND THE SCIENTIFIC INTEGRATION OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE: ADVANCING HOLISTIC AND EVIDENCE-BASED HEALTHCARE

Traditional medicine systems continue to serve as primary healthcare resources for a substantial proportion of the global population, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to modern medical infrastructure remains limited. Ethnopharmacology has emerged as a critical interdisciplinary field that systematically bridges indigenous knowledge systems with contemporary biomedical science, enabling scientific validation, standardization, and integration of traditional therapeutic practices. This comprehensive review examines the evolving role of ethnopharmacology in advancing holistic treatment paradigms through methodological innovations such as network pharmacology, systems biology, metabolomics, artificial intelligence, and multi-omics technologies. The paper critically analyzes multimodal therapeutic strategies, constitutional typing frameworks, and mind–body integration approaches embedded within traditional medicine systems. Furthermore, it evaluates current challenges related to clinical validation, quality control, regulatory harmonization, safety assessment, and ethical issues including intellectual property rights and equitable benefit-sharing. Emerging evidence suggests that traditional medicine offers promising complementary strategies for managing complex chronic and multifactorial diseases; however, rigorous interdisciplinary research, robust clinical methodologies, and culturally sensitive policy frameworks are essential for its sustainable integration into global healthcare systems. Strengthening collaborations between traditional knowledge holders and scientific communities will be pivotal in developing equitable, evidence-based, and patient-centered holistic healthcare models.
