Formulation and Evaluation of an Anti-Acne Toner Preparation Containing Red palm oil (Red palm oil) for Antibacterial Activity Against Propionibacterium acnes
Background: Acne is a common skin disorder associated with the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. Red palm oil derived from the fruit contains bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial properties, making it a promising active ingredient for anti-acne toner formulations. Aim: to develop an anti-acne toner containing Red palm oil, evaluate its physical characteristics, and determine its antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes. Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory research using a quantitative approach. Four formulations were prepared, namely F0 (base), F1 (1%), F2 (3%), and F3 (5%) Red palm oil. The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, stability using the cycling test, skin irritation, and hedonic acceptance. Antibacterial activity was determined using the disc diffusion method. Results: In conclusion, Red palm oil derived from the fruit can be successfully formulated into an anti-acne toner that meets the required physical evaluation parameters, is stable and safe for use, and exhibits antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes. In conclusion, red palm oil derived from the fruit can be successfully formulated into an anti-acne toner that meets the required physical evaluation parameters, is stable and safe for use, and exhibits antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes.
