Between Media Discourse and Public Reading: Audience Appropriations of the Meanings of Success

Media discourses on success circulate widely in journalism and digital platforms, frequently articulating individual merit, voice and regional belonging. Discourse analytic studies of such materials have concentrated on their production and circulation, often without examining how readers receive them. This article presents the theoretical foundation and the methodological design of an exploratory sounding of the effects of journalistic texts on success, voice and regional identity, based on reader comments publicly available on the internet, together with a first pilot reading. The corpus comprises eight news and opinion texts from Brazilian outlets of different editorial orientations, previously described in discourse analytic studies. Comments could be partially recovered for one text, an interview in which a male singer disqualifies the voice and conduct of a female singer. Of thirty comments displayed, five were visible and analyzed. Using the encoding and decoding model, one comment ratified the vocal judgement, one negotiated it, one contested the interviewee's authority on gender grounds and two displaced the discussion toward the interviewee or the outlet. None addressed the singer's trajectory of success. The small set only demonstrates the applicability of the analytical matrix and does not support generalization. Ethical procedures for publicly accessible data are specified.
