Beyond Peer Comparison: Social Contexts, Labels and Identity Development in Adolescence

Adolescence is a critical period for identity formation, self-worth, and the development of future goals, yet adolescents’ self-perceptions are shaped within complex social environments. This exploratory study examined the question: How do peer comparison, social environments, and labels influence adolescents’ self-perception, self-worth, identity, and ambitions? Data were collected through an anonymous cross-sectional Google Forms survey using convenience sam-pling. The final sample included 51 participants across multiple age and educational groups, with most respondents aged 16–17 and enrolled in 11th–12th grade. Survey items used a five-point Likert scale and assessed peer comparison, social environments, self-worth, labels, and goals or ambitions. Descriptive analyses indicated that adolescents frequently reported feeling more authentic and confident in some social environments than others. Peer comparison was common, but comparison was not generally endorsed as positive motivation. Many participants reported that academic or social labels influenced self-perception and behavior, and achievement appeared closely connected to self-worth for many respondents. Ambitions were often described as socially influenced, although participants were less likely to report lowering goals because of comparison. Overall, the study suggests that adolescent identity is shaped not by peer compar-ison alone, but through the interaction of comparison, social environments, labels, achievement expectations, and self-worth. Findings are descriptive rather than causal, but they contribute an integrated exploratory perspective on adolescents’ lived social experiences.
