Effect of acupuncture at LU9, LI11 and UB17 on hemodynamic parameters in hypertensive patients: a case series

Hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular disorder associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, and complementary approaches such as acupuncture have gained attention as potential adjunctive interventions for blood pressure regulation. This case series describes the effects of acupuncture at LU9, LI11, and UB17 on blood pressure and selected cardiovascular hemodynamic parameters in three patients with hypertension aged 55-65 years. Participants received acupuncture treatment at the three specified points for five consecutive days. Sterile disposable needles were manually stimulated and retained for 30 minutes during each session. We assessed blood pressure and cardiovascular hemodynamic parameters, including pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure, rate pressure product, and double product, at baseline, immediately after the first treatment session, and after completion of the five-day intervention. All three participants demonstrated reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure following the intervention. Favorable changes were also observed in pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure, rate pressure product, and double product, suggesting improved cardiovascular hemodynamics and reduced myocardial workload. The treatment was well tolerated, with no adverse events reported. These findings suggest that acupuncture at LU9, LI11, and UB17 may be an integrative approach to improving blood pressure control and cardiovascular hemodynamic function in individuals with hypertension. Larger, rigorously designed clinical studies are warranted to confirm these preliminary findings and clarify the underlying mechanisms.
