SATVA AND DRUTI KALPANA: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF METAL/MINERAL LIQUEFACTION TECHNIQUES IN RASASHASTRA
Rasashastra, the Ayurvedic science of Iatrochemistry, has developed a sophisticated set of pharmaceutical procedures — Shodhana, Marana, Jarana, Satvapatana and Druti Kalpana — to convert metals, minerals, gems and mercury into safe, bioavailable and therapeutically potent forms. Among these, Satvapatana (extraction of the metallic essence, Satva, from an ore) and Druti Kalpana (liquefaction of a metal, mineral or gem so that it remains in a molten or semi-molten state even after cooling) represent two closely linked but distinct pharmaceutical operations. Druti occupies a unique place because, unlike Bhasma (calcined ash), the processed substance is never allowed to lose its liquid character; the classical texts describe five defining features (Nirlepatva, Drutatva, Tejastva, Laghuta and Asamyoga with mercury) that distinguish a true Druti. This review compiles the classical references to Satva and Druti from texts such as Rasa Ratna Samuccaya, Rasa Ratnakara, Rasa Tarangini, Ayurveda Prakasha and Rasendra Chudamani, integrates them with the contemporary pharmaceutical and analytical literature, and attempts a plausible chemical rationale — acid–base neutralisation, flux/slag formation, redox change, chelation, thermal decomposition and pH-driven solubility — for the transformations observed during Satva extraction and Druti preparation. The classification of Druti by method (Garbha and Bahya), by use (for mercurial processing, for therapeutics, or both) and by Varga (Maharasa, Uparasa, Dhatu, Ratna and Sudha) is discussed, along with the six described methods of preparation (Suryatapi, Agnitapi, Swedana, Avapa, Puta and Sthapana). A comparative appraisal of Druti, Bhasma and modern chemically-defined metal drugs is presented. The review concludes that Druti Kalpana is a scientifically interesting but comparatively under-researched dosage form of Rasashastra that merits systematic modern analytical and pharmacological validation.
